Welcome to 5LD!
Teacher: Miss L Davis
LSA: Miss N Treble
Welcome to 5LD’s class page.
The children from 5LD have had an enthusiastic start to their year (after a mix up of classes) and have dealt with the changes with maturity and excitement.
The children are showing a real passion for their learning and I am really looking forward to seeing our learning journey unfold this academic year.
Below is some key information that you may find useful.
Please ensure you record any reading that takes place at home with a simple comment inside your child’s Reading Record. Children are encouraged to read at every opportunity in the classroom, whether that is fictional story books or encyclopedias to improve their knowledge of the world around them. Our reading corner is currently under construction so we are hoping to have it all up and running after half term.
Spellings are handed out on a Friday ready for a test the following Friday. Please make sure the children are practising their spellings every week. Children can practise their spellings in any way they like – we have sent home a list of suggested techniques (some are quite fun!) to help the children learn the weekly spellings.
These are also handed out every Friday. At the start of the year, all children in year 5 started on their 3 times tables. It is essential the children practise their times tables every week ready for their test on the following Friday. When the children have answered all 60 times tables questions correctly they can then move up to the next level. We currently have 4 children completing their 9 times table!
If you have any questions, queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me in person, via the school office or using Class Dojo.
The start of the new year brings new class arrangements for Year 5. So far, the children in 5LD (both new and old) have dealt with the changes with real maturity and open-mindedness and many have said how they like the new reduced class sizes.
In English, our text is 'The Tree Giant’. The children will be working on developing various skills, such as descriptive writing.
In maths this half term, we will be working on fractions, percentages and decimals.
Our topic in Science this half term is living things and their habitats. We will be focusing on plants, amphibians and mammals.
We will be investigating the Grand Canyon, how it was formed and how human intervention has changed it.
Our overarching theme in RE is to investigate the question ‘Why do religious books and teachings matter?’ We will be exploring some key ideas behind Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
