Welcome to 6CP
Teacher: Mrs Bond (Miss Phillips on maternity leave)
LSA: Mrs Fermor
What are we learning in the Autumn Term?
Maths: For each unit below we teach how to tackle fluency questions as well as applying their new learnt skills to reasoning and problem solving questions.
- Place value
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division
We start each maths lesson with 'Can you still?' so recap concepts previously taught.
Times tables: the children can practise their times tables at home using the PiXL times tables app and they can also use Times Table rockstars. Their log in details are in their reading diaries. We also allow time in school. It is expected that Year 6 children know all their times tables.
Writing: We are starting off this term studying the old black and white films and building on vocabularly. Each week we will have a word of the day that we explore. We will look at its meaning and how to use it in context.
Reading: Reading skills are taught every morning. Children may be asked to echo read and then there is a focus on either vocabulary, inference or deduction. The children have gained confidence in the last term with skimming, scanning texts, making margin notes and highlighting key words and phrases.
Spellings are tested every Wednesday and new spellings are given out each Wednesday.
The children also will have P.E twice a week, music, art and computing.
How can I support my child's learning at home?
- Spellings (for a weekly spelling test)
- Hegarty Maths homework
- Times tables practice
- Reading every night
The children at Hamp Academy have access to the library daily and are able to pick books from our accelerated reader range to read and then take quizzes on. Accelerated Reader gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice. Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them.
The children will be set maths homework on the Hegarty Maths website every week.
- Hegarty maths is a collection of excellent video resources, students should watch the video, and make notes.
- The video will set questions at certain points, students should pause the video, and then attempt those questions.
- After watching the video, students can then attempt the tasks. You can still use the video, and the video itself has a model similar to the questions asked.
