6CP

Welcome to 6CP

Welcome to 6CP's class page:

Ms Bragg and I (Miss Phillips) have both thoroughly enjoyed teaching the children in 6CP for two terms so far this academic year and we are very much looking forward to what the Summer Term has to offer too.

What have we been learning in Year 6?

During the Autumn Term, we focused on place value and the four operations in maths. In English, we began writing a range of different stories including portal stories, character descriptions and some non-fiction texts. Our topic for the Autumn Term was Black History and, as part of October's 'Black History Month', we engaged in a couple of debates: 'Should Nelson Mandela have been imprisoned?' and 'Should Rosa Parks have sat on the bus?'. Ask your child all about it. Towards the end of the Autumn Term we moved on to fractions in maths and continued developing our writing skills in English. The teaching of reading was a massive focus for us in Year 6 during the Autumn Term (and still is) so we have been teaching the children lots of reading skills.

In the Spring Term, the children learned a number of other mathematical concepts, including: fractions, decimals and percentages; area, perimeter and volume; and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We have been lucky in Year 6 this year that we had the privilege of teaching children across the year group and your child may have been taught by Mrs Meade or Miss Kay during the Spring Term for maths or reading. In reading, we continued to develop our reading skills: understanding of vocabulary; finding and retrieving information; making inferences; and summarising what we have read. In writing, we also continued to develop our skills and the children have become experts in describing characters and settings in particular. We have also been teaching a lot of SPaG which the children have been using successfully in their writing.

What do we have to look forward to in the Summer Term?

Our main focus at the beginning of the Summer Term is the SATs (see below). Therefore, we are continuing to teach and develop the children's mathematical, reading and SPaG skills.

We will also be focusing on writing in Year 6 and creating a variety of texts to show off all of our writing skills.

We have the Year 6 residential to Rock and Rapids coming up (last week of June), 'Failure Week', Sports Day and transition events.
