Welcome to 6CP
Welcome to 6CP's class page:
Working in 6CP this year are: Mrs Bond (class teacher), Ms Bragg (LSA) and Miss Newbury (LSA). We have moved rooms since September and you will now find us in the Polden room, which is in the back playground, in the Fleming building.
What are we learning in the Spring Term?
Maths: For each unit below we teach how to tackle fluency questions as well as applying their new learnt skills to reasoning and problem solving questions.
We start each maths lesson with 'Can you still?' so recap concepts previously taught.
Times tables: the children can practise their times tables at home using the PiXL times tables app. Their log in details are in their reading diaries. We also allow time in school. It is expected that Year 6 children know all their times tables.
Writing: This term the children have written suspense stories, wrote scientific explanations and are currently writing a newspaper report.
Reading: Reading skills are taught every morning. Children may be asked to echo read and then there is a focus on either vocabulary, inference or deduction. The children have gained confidence in the last term with skimming, scanning texts, making margin notes and highlighting key words and phrases.
Spellings are tested every Friday and new spellings are given out each Monday.
Science: Animals, including humans.
Geography: Focus: 'Our World' - using atlases, identifying countries, continents, comparing landscapes, looking at natural and man made influences worldwide but also around Bridgwater.
R.E: What do Christians believe about salvation? (Links with Easter)
The children are also really enjoying their French, P.E. and art lessons so far this year.
How can I support my child's learning at home?
- Spellings (for a weekly spelling test)
- Hegarty Maths homework
- Times tables practice
- Reading every night
The children at Hamp Academy have access to the library daily and are able to pick books from our accelerated reader range to read and then take quizzes on. Accelerated Reader gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice. Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them.
The children will be set maths homework on the Hegarty Maths website every week.
- Hegarty maths is a collection of excellent video resources, students should watch the video, and make notes.
- The video will set questions at certain points, students should pause the video, and then attempt those questions.
- After watching the video, students can then attempt the tasks. You can still use the video, and the video itself has a model similar to the questions asked.
