Welcome to 6KK!
Working in 6KK this year are: Miss Kay (class teacher), Ms Bragg (LSA) and Miss Newbury (LSA). During the first half term of year 6, all three of us have really enjoyed getting to know the children in 6KK and getting started with our Year 6 work.
What are we learning in the Autumn Term?
Maths: In the Autumn Term, we are focusing on place value, the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and fractions.
Writing: We have been using 'Little Freak' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INHVxA-rM48) to create descriptive paragraphs, character descriptions and persuasive adverts.
Reading: We have mostly been focusing on the retrieval skill and we will begin to work on making and understanding inferences.
Science: We have been learning about living things, including how to categorise animals, how mould grows and creating our own micro-organisms.
History: We have been learning about the Industrial Revolution and the 'Vile Victorians'. The lessons have been very interesting so far. Did you know that cholera spread throughout London from ONE contaminated water pipe?
The children are also really enjoying their R.E., French, P.E. and art lessons so far this year.
How can I support my child's learning at home?
- Spellings (for a weekly spelling test)
- Hegarty Maths homework
- Times tables practice
- Reading every night
The children at Hamp Academy have access to the library daily and are able to pick books from our accelerated reader range to read and then take quizzes on. Accelerated Reader gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice. Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them.
The children will be set maths homework on the Hegarty Maths website every week.
- Hegarty maths is a collection of excellent video resources, students should watch the video, and make notes.
- The video will set questions at certain points, students should pause the video, and then attempt those questions.
- After watching the video, students can then attempt the tasks. You can still use the video, and the video itself has a model similar to the questions asked.
