Welcome to 6KR!
Teacher: Mrs Axe
What are we learning in the Spring Term?
For each unit below we teach the children how to tackle fluency questions as well as applying their new learnt skills to reasoning and problem solving questions.
The curriculum content we will cover this term includes:-
- Ratio and Proportion
We start each lesson with 'Can you still?' to recap concepts previously taught, or 'Rapid Reasoning' to develop the children's reasoning and problem solving skills.
Times tables: the children can practise their times tables at home using Times Table Rockstars. We also allow time in school. It is expected that Year 6 children know all their times tables.
Throughout this half term, the children will be developing a range of writing skills including punctuation and grammar, as well as developing their vocabulary. They will compose a range of different text types including:-
- Descriptive writing
- Newspaper Report (The Titanic)
Reading skills are taught every morning. Children may be asked to echo read and then there is a focus on either vocabulary, retrieval, inference or deduction. The children have gained confidence with skimming and scanning texts, making margin notes and highlighting key words and phrases.
Spellings rules are taught in school every week. They are tested every two weeks and new spellings are given out once the children have been tested.
The children also will have P.E twice a week, music, art, computing and PSHE lessons.
6KR have P.E. every Tuesday and Thursday - please come to school in your P.E. kits.
How can I support my child's learning at home?
- Spellings (for a fortnightly spelling test)
- Times tables practice
- Reading every night
- Mymaths weekly.
The children at Hamp Academy have access to the library daily and are able to pick books from our Accelerated Reader range to read and then take quizzes on. Accelerated Reader gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice. Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them.
