6ZB
Welcome to 6ZB - 2024/25
Teacher: Mrs Bond
LSA:
What are we learning in the Autumn Term?
Maths:
For each unit below we teach the children how to tackle fluency questions as well as applying their new learnt skills to reasoning and problem solving questions.
The curriculum content we will cover this term includes:-
Place Value
4 operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
We start each lesson with 'Can you still?' to recap concepts previously taught, or 'Rapid Reasoning' to develop the children's reasoning and problem solving skills.
Times tables: the children can practise their times tables at home using Times Table Rockstars. We also allow time in school. It is expected that Year 6 children know all their times tables.
Writing:
We use the scheme, Literacy Tree, our writing will be based on the books: The Arrival by Shaun Tan and Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah.
We also teach discrete grammar lessons twice a week.
Reading:
Reading skills are taught every morning. Children may be asked to echo read and then there is a focus on either vocabulary, retrieval, inference or deduction. The children have gained confidence with skimming and scanning texts, making margin notes and highlighting key words and phrases.
Spellings:
Spellings rules are taught in school every week. They are tested every Friday and new spellings are given out once the children have been tested.
Other Subjects:
The children also will have P.E twice a week, music, art, computing and PSHE lessons.
6ZB have P.E. every Monday and Friday - please come to school in your P.E. kits.
How can I support my child's learning at home?
Homework:
- Spellings (for a weekly spelling test)
- Times tables practice
- Reading every night
Accelerated Reader:
The children at Hamp Academy have access to the library daily and are able to pick books from our Accelerated Reader range to read and then take quizzes on. Accelerated Reader gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice. Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them.
