Curriculum

At Hamp Academy, we have designed our curriculum, so as to place a high priority on improving the basic knowledge within all subjects, especially in the core subjects of English, maths, science and ICT.  It is our aim to provide an exciting and stimulating curriculum that provides as many opportunities as possible for our children to achieve and become well-rounded individuals.  When appropriate our curriculum is tailored for the individual needs of children, including social and emotional support and specific SEN plans.

Our curriculum encourages all pupils to understand, be interested in and show respect to others and their beliefs, whilst also developing their own self-esteem and knowledge of their place in the wider world, e-safety and of British Values. The values of SMSC are of great importance to us and underpin our curriculum approach.

Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
To ensure that we teach a broad and balanced curriculum, we follow the New National Curriculum programmes of study (September 2014), covering the key knowledge required in all KS2 subjects.  With understanding, we can then focus on skills.  Learning the skills for individual subjects, such as reading co-ordinates on maps in geography and analysing primary and secondary sources in history, is central to the teaching of individual lessons within our curriculum.  For the whole school curriculum topic map, calculation policies and English policies, please see the subsequent dropdowns.  To find out further details of the curriculum content in the different year groups, please see the relevant pages.

Our Modern Foreign Language of choice is French.  Hamp Academy also takes part in European Languages Day each year.  There are also opportunities through our cross-curricula topics to look at the language, history and culture of other countries, such as China, Germany and Italy.

For music, we use the Charanga scheme to teach our children how to read and understand music, and also to sing and play musical instruments. We also practise traditional and modern songs linked to key events such as Christmas, Easter and  Harvest Festival.

RE/PSHE
Our aim is that Religious Education should contribute to children’s spiritual, moral, social, cultural and intellectual development, providing children with the opportunities to encounter, explore and develop a knowledge and appreciation of the differing faiths and beliefs of others. We also encourage children to recognise and reflect on their own beliefs and values. RE makes a valuable contribution to the multi-cultural development of pupils in this school who would not otherwise meet with many other religions at first hand.

In PSHE we follow the Jigsaw programme, where learning focuses on establishing a sense of personal responsibility, self-esteem, sensitivity to the needs of others and being part of a community both within the school and beyond it. Children will learn to value themselves, grow in self-confidence, and behave with care and understanding for others. Pupils will also learn about personal health issues, including sex and drugs education, and tolerance of other faiths and lifestyles.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities
Central to the life in our school are the many extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities that we provide for our children.  A particular strength is the after-school clubs that run every afternoon until 4pm, ranging from choir and dance club to times tables and art club.
